Happy New Year everybody!

Another year has passed and we have to go through the process again of trying not to write 2021 down instead of 2022… I know I have made that mistake a few times already!

皆さ～ん！　ハッピーニューイヤー！

古い年にグッドバーイ！ 2022じゃなくて、2021って書かないようにしないとね。実は、僕自身 もう既に何回も2021って書いてしまったよ！

 

It’s hard to believe this school year is almost finished as well!

Where does the time go…?

今年の学校がもう終わるなんて信じられないよ！

時間が過ぎるのは　メッチャ早いね!?

 

We have had a great start back into our “play with English” classes! For the past month or so, I have been seeing a lot more engagement in class. It seems the new year really reset everybody’s batteries!

私たちは 英語クラスでのいつもの遊びに戻ってきたね!

もう今では　みんながレッスンに集中しているのがよくわかるよ。　

新しい年になって、みんなの電池がリフレッシュできているよね。

 

I decided to kick this year off with a topic everybody knows and loves: FOOD!

We looked at vegetables, meats, combinations of both and other food products as well including more traditional items such as Japanese “Osechi”.

We have been focusing on what kind of food we like and dislike and if certain combinations of food are “yummy” or “yucky”.

僕は みんなが知っていて、大好きなトピックで今年をスタートすることにしたよ：食べもの！

私たちは 日本の”おせち”の様な伝統的なものから、野菜、肉、その両方を混ぜたもの、それと それ以外の食べものを見たよ。

私たちは どんな種類の食べものが好きで、嫌いかに注目して、合わさったある食べものが 美味しかったり、そうでなかったりするかにも注目しました。

 

Our goals have been: 私たちの目的:

• To practice basic English food vocabulary

　食べものについての基本的な英語の語彙の練習

 

• To practice food name pronunciation

   食べものの名前の発音練習

 

• To be able to say whether we like or dislike a type of food

   食べものの種類で好きか嫌いかを答えることができること

 

• To be able to ask if you like or dislike a type of food

   食べものの種類で好きか嫌いかを尋ねることができること

 

• To learn a few new songs

       幾つかの新しい歌を習うこと   

 

Over the course of 3 lessons we have worked through these goals and I can now see students singing songs in English through all of our ages ranges with confidence! (Ask your child “Do you like broccoli?” and see what they say!) You may hear a familiar melody…

私たちは 3つのレッスンのコースを通じて、これらの目的を成し遂げました。

僕は、子供たちが年齢を問わずに もはや自信をもって 英語の歌を唄っている生徒たちを目の当たりにすることができています。

(“Do you like broccoli?”って、あなたのお子さんに聞いてみてください。そして なんて答えるかを見てあげてください!)

たぶん、耳慣れたメロディーが聞こえてくると思います。

 

We started with basic food vocabulary that does shares the same name is Japanese (i.e. broccoli) and identified the differences in pronunciation between English and Japanese.

After covering this vocabulary, we moved on to putting these new words into a song and practicing in that way while also incorporating the grammar structure “do you like —” and “yes I do / no I don’t”.

僕たちは (例えば、ブロッコリーの様に) 日本語で同じ名前をもっている基本的な食べものの語彙の練習を始めました。

そして、英語と日本語での発音の違いを見分けました。

この語彙を学んだ後、僕たちは ある歌に新しい言葉を組み入れたり、文法構成も組み入れたりしながら　それを練習したりしました。例えば、”Do you like … …が好きですか” とか “はい、好きです / いいえ、嫌いです” とか。

 

Once everybody became more comfortable using this material, we looked at different food and different combinations of food, having everybody think about what type of food combined would result in something “yummy” or “yucky”.

みんなが気分良くなった後、違った食べものを見て、混ざり合った食べものを見て、そして それが “美味しい”のか、”めっちゃまずい”のかを想像してもらうんだ。

 

Rather than any regular games for this topic we opted to do quiz type activity at the end of our lessons where selected students would be asked to give an answer to 3 different questions.

If the student managed to get all 3 questions correct, they would be rewarded with a shiny new sticker! It was fun and a nice change of pace!

However, from next week we will be returning to playing a little game at the end of the lesson as I still think it is a fun note to end on!

この話題へのいつものゲームではなくて、僕たちのレッスンの最後にクイズ形式のことをすることにしたね。それは、選ばれた子どもが３つの違った質問に答えるというゲーム。

もし、その子どもが３つとも正解したら、ぴかぴかに光った新しいステッカーを貰えるんだ！

とても面白くて、レッスンのリズムを変えることができたね。

でも、来週から レッスンの最後にほんの少しだけゲームをする様にするね。だって、それが　レッスンの最後に相応しいからね。

 

From next week we will be slightly splitting the topics based on the age groups as I believe the content will be sliiiiiightly too difficult for the little ones!

小さい子ども達にとって　ちょっと難しすぎるかもしれないので、来週からは 年代別に分けた話題にするね。
